Hungarian Undercover Journalist Accused With Misleading Authorities
A journalist who posed as a refugee in the summer in order to gain access to detention centres has been charged with falsifying public documents and misleading the authorities. Index staff writer Gergely Nyilas posed as a Kyrgyz citizen in August, during the peak of the refugee crisis, and allowed himself to be caught at the Röszke border station for registration.

Nyilas said he went undercover because authorities were not allowing journalists to gain access to refugee centres.

He lived practically as a prisoner with others behind windows fitted with bars in the building of the law enforcement authority.

He was released after he revealed his real identity.
