Gov't Refuse to Pay HUF 6 Billion for Budapest Chain Bridge Renewal
The cabinet will not pay the Ft 6 billion sum it had promised as a subsidy for the renovation of the Chain Bridge, the Regional Development Ministry told ATV on Sunday.

The ministry claimed that Budapest is not honouring the provisions of the government resolution, as passenger cars are to be banned from the bridge.

A final decision on such a ban will be made next summer. Until then, only BKK buses, taxis, bicycles and motorcycles can cross the bridge. Pedestrians and cars may not use it for at least six months.

Samu Balogh, the mayor’s chief of staff, said they had honoured the condition, as the next clause in the contract stipulates that a decision must be made on the question by the end of the bridge upgrade.

“This is exactly how we are proceeding, but this decision will not be made in a smoke-filled room, as the people of Budapest are expected to have an opportunity in the summer to decide on the traffic order on the Chain Bridge”, he said.
