"The Pest German Theatre opened on what is now Vörösmarty Square on 9 February 1812, with two plays by Kotzebue, for which the music was composed by Beethoven. The idea for the establishment of the theatre arose during the reign of Josef II, as Pest was gaining in importance and the growing bourgeoisie had an increasing demand for culture.

"As for the number of items contained, the department of drawings and prints holds the largest collection in the Hungarian National Gallery. However, the significance of prints and drawings is less well known, as paper-based objects are very sensitive and cannot be included in the permanent exhibition.
