The sensation of chemical compounds occurring in nature takes place through the so called vomeronasal organ (organum vomeronasale). This organ is to be found in the nose, but it is receptive to signaling molecules rather than olfactory impulses. In addition to this function, it is capable of discerning various emotional states, such as fear, aggression, or sexual desire. There is evidence that in human beings the organ is active at foetal stage and in early infanthood, and although its existence has been known for over 200 years, we have very little knowledge about its function or precise operation. Scientists find it possible that the vomeronasal organ affects human behavior as the first form of communication, as is the case with several animal species.

In most pieces of József Csató‘s new collection, we can see pairs of figures, or couples. It is not easily decided whether they are amorous couples, relatives, or children making friends. In any case, the lonely figures are reminiscent of abandoned lovers, and the couples look like foes in everlasting feud. Sometimes they are exhaling and inhaling some kind of a smoke or mist. Although biologists are unsure about the role of the vomeronasal organ in human beings, it is apparent that figures in these paintings must be relying on some such organ in their communication with each other. As compared to his earlier output, this time Csató deploys a different combination of colors, as well as an array of bold, concentrated shapes.
