This morning I read a lengthy interview with Viktor Orbán on the Ferenc Puskás Academy’s website. Several newspapers summarized the prime minister’s thoughts on the state of Hungarian football. The historian Gábor Egry, whom readers of Hungarian Spectrum know from his occasional comments, wrote on Facebook about this interview: “Compulsory reading. Really. Everything one ought to and must know ...
Formula 1, Budapest Hungaroring, 26 - 28 July

The first thing to say about the Hungaroring, is that it can be phenomenally dull; at least it could be up until last year. For most of its 25+ year history on the F1 calendar, the tight and twisting bowl-shaped track on the outskirts of Budapest came with the reputation of regularly hosting complete snoozefests. As for the circuit itself, it’s more like a go-kart track than anything else. ...

So here we came – a Hungarian family and friends – supporting someone special at the XXX. London Summer Olympic Games Modern Pentathlon event. That morning we hit the road as early as 06.00 as our hotel was around South Croydon and we had to get to Stratford by 7.30 for the first event held in the Olympic Park. Although travelling around London for someone not speaking the language may seem a bit ...

Hungarian athletes are getting surprisingly strong backing from supporters at the Olympic Games in London. Népszabadság’s analyst believes most of them are Hungarians working in Great Britain. “At home, in London,” the title of a Népszabadság column reads, echoing statements by scores of Hungarian sportsmen who said they almost felt at home during the Olympic events. Hungarian supporters have ...

Xpat Report: 2012 Summer Olympics

With the Summer Olympics in London almost upon us, I have been trying to remember anything from past events. I would like to think that the first Olympics I remember was 1972 when swimmer Mark Spitz won 7 gold medals. However, I am probably confabulating this since I was about 5 years old and do not remember anything about the tragedy in Munich. Olga Korbut, who my dad had a massive crush on, ...
