The black market for cigarettes in Hungary has grown to 12.1% of total sales, market research company GfK Hungária said. A little more than a year ago, GfK Hungária said illegal sales of cigarettes accounted for 7.7% of total turnover. In its latest release, the market researcher said the rate had reached 11.8% by the end of last year, but noted there had been “restructuring” on the market.

Hungary’s official cigarettes market has shrunk over the past two years, Thursday’s business daily Világgazdaság said, citing data from the tax office NAV. In January-June this year 3.6 billion cigarettes were sold through legal outlets, compared to 6.2 billion in the same period in 2012.

A new pay-by-phone parking system was introduced throughout Hungary on July 1. The system is operated as a state monopoly by Nemzeti Mobilfizetési Zrt. The new service is available to anyone and anywhere under the same terms. Drivers can choose to make payments directly to Nemzeti Mobilfizetési or via Magyar Telekom, Telenor, Vodafone, Mpark, Evopay and Sense/Net Zrt.
