The revamp of the Budapest-Belgrade rail line could begin this year once the necessary agreements between the Hungarian and Chinese governments are signed, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said. The Hungarian-Serbian-Chinese working group dealing with the modernisation of the railway line held its third session at the foreign ministry on Thursday.

Central Budapest’s Nyugati pályaudvar railway station has reopened after a two-week maintenance period in the early hours of Monday, meaning that passenger trains are again serving the station according to regular schedules. Most of the station has been opened to passengers, although there are still obstacles to pedestrian traffic on the building’s side towards the WestEnd shopping mall.

The Ft 290 million renovation project is meant to considerably improve the standards of services offered by the station as well as that of the train transport. Some 60,000-70,000 passengers pass through the station every day.
