Hungary continues to have some of the highest suicide rates in Europe, according to a study published by the World Health Organization. WHO data suggests that Guyana in South America is the country where suicides are most common, with 42 out of 100 000 inhabitants dying as a consequence of intentional self-harm each year.

Speaking about the suicide attack at Istanbul international airport on Tuesday evening, György Bakondi, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, said that for their own safety Hungarians travelling to Turkey should follow rules similar to those which the Counter Terrorism Centre suggested to people attending the UEFA Euro 2016 football championships in France.

The Hungarian cabinet took a decision on Wednesday to carry out unscheduled security checks and controls at Liszt Ferenc International Airport in order to reassure Hungarian citizens and foreigners arriving on international flights, György Bakondi, senior adviser on domestic security to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, told a press briefing.

Nobel laureate author Imre Kertész died at age 86 after a long and serious illness, the publisher Magvető said. The novelist, essayist and translator was the first Hungarian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, becoming a Nobel laureate in 2002.

Hungarian President János Áder expressed condolences to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the suicide bombing in a historic district of Istanbul. “I was shocked and saddened to hear the news that the peace in Turkey was once again disrupted by a terrorist attack,” Áder wrote in a letter.
