Last week, I accompanied Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to Japan as part of a large delegation that included Minister of Economy Mihály Varga, Minister of Human Resources Zoltán Balog and several other government and business representatives. The visit was a big deal for both Hungary and Japan and garnered a lot of coverage in the Japanese and Hungarian media.

There’s the quiet golfer clap that bystanders use so as not to disturb the golfers; the string player clap that musicians make when tapping their bows on the music stands; the airline clap made by grateful passengers when the airplane lands. November is a time to remember those who have gone before. In Hungary, Imagefamilies visit cemeteries, leave wreaths and flowers, light candles and talk about loved ones they’ve lost. For me, it’s a time to think about Hungarians whose lives were lived in the shadow of war, fascism, communism or poverty, and I am once again grateful to have grown up in peace, freedom and prosperity.

Cultural programmes linked to Hungary have begun in Japan. State Secretary for Public Diplomacy Zoltán Kovács is attending the events, and on Saturday his itinerary includes opening the cultural festival in Tokyo in which young Hungarian performers from Transylvania will take the stage.

Putting a little twist on the original saying, people can say whatever they want about a person that comes from afar. In case of Nadja Massun, the proverb may be even truer since she does come from very far she lives in Mexico but was born in Africa to a Hungarian mother and a Belgian father.
